Auto-Calibration for Neonatal Condition Monitoring
نویسنده
چکیده
This project describes our approach for automating the calibration stage needed by the Factorial Switching Linear Dynamical System (FSLDS) for neonatal condition monitoring. Using observations collected by the monitoring equipment, the FSLDS proposed by Prof Christopher Williams and Dr John Quinn [22] is highly successful in inferring the probability distributions of both physiological and artifactual hidden factors affecting the measurements. The detection of these factors presents vital importance to clinicians. However, the FSLDS must be calibrated using manually selected data segments corresponding to normal dynamics. Our goal is to automatically find such intervals. The proposed solution uses a binary classifier able to discriminate normal sections from a set of fixed length measurement intervals. A “channel-based” classification is justified, together with a new labeling for the data, feature extraction solutions and a performance criterion especially developed for the task. Experimental results have demonstrated that our classifiers are able to correctly extract normality sections from the observations on hand. More importantly, a number of comparative tests between the autoand manually-calibrated FSLDSs provide evidence that our approach is indeed successful in uncovering the hidden factors influencing the observational data.

Automating the Calibration of a Neonatal Condition Monitoring System
Condition monitoring of premature babies in intensive care can be carried out using a Factorial Switching Linear Dynamical System (FSLDS) [15]. A crucial part of training the FSLDS is the manual calibration stage, where an interval of normality must be identified for each baby that is monitored. In this paper we replace this manual step by using a classifier to predict whether an interval is no...

For the past two decades, the nuclear industry has attempted to move toward a condition-based maintenance philosophy using new technologies developed to monitor the condition of plant equipment during operation. Specifically, techniques have been developed to monitor the condition of sensors and their associated instrument loops while a plant is operating. Traditionally, instruments must be rec...

This paper describes an electro-mechanical auto-calibration technique for use in capacitive MEMS accelerometers. Auto-calibration is achieved using the combined information derived from an initial measurement of the resonance frequency and the measurement of the pull-in voltages during device operation, with an estimation of process-induced variations in device dimensions from layout and deviat...

The vital signs monitoring data of an infant receiving intensive care are a rich source of information about its health condition. One major concern about the state of health of such patients is the onset of neonatal sepsis, a life-threatening bloodstream infection. As early signs are subtle and current diagnosis procedures involve slow laboratory testing, sepsis detection based on the monitore...

Traditionally, the calibration of safety critical nuclear instrumentation has been performed during each refueling outage. However, many nuclear plants have moved toward conditiondirected rather than time-directed calibration. This condition-directed calibration is accomplished through the use of on-line monitoring. On-line monitoring (OLM) commonly uses an autoassociative empirical modeling ar...
